KnitWell Created a Chief Digital and Customer Data Officer Role. Here's What It Signals for eCommerce Hiring.

October 1, 2026  •  By Adam Rose, eCommerce Placement
Quick Answer

KnitWell Group, the parent company of Ann Taylor, Loft, Talbots, and the Chico's brands, has appointed Angelica Munson to a newly created role: chief digital and customer data officer. The role covers customer data, insights, personalization, AI-assisted marketing tools, and digital marketing under one executive. For eCommerce hiring, the signal is that data, marketing, and digital are being treated as a single function at the top of the org, which changes what companies need to hire beneath that leader, and what kind of candidate a search for it should target.

Most eCommerce org charts still split the work of knowing the customer across several executives. Data sits with technology or finance, marketing sits with the CMO, and the website sits with an eCommerce leader. KnitWell Group just put all three under one title. According to Retail Dive, citing a September 22 company press release, KnitWell appointed Angelica Munson as its chief digital and customer data officer, a position that did not exist before.

In the new role, Munson will oversee customer data, customer insights, AI-assisted marketing tools, personalization, digital marketing, and other pieces of the company's enterprise strategy. Before KnitWell, she was global chief digital officer at Shiseido Group, and she held senior roles at Fast Retailing, including at Theory and Helmut Lang, and at Estée Lauder's Clinique brand. At Shiseido she launched the Beauty Tech Lab, which offered AI-based skin diagnostics.

Why Would a Multi-Brand Apparel Company Create This Role Now?

KnitWell is a holding company, and its structure explains a lot. Ann Taylor, Loft, and Talbots came together under the KnitWell name about three years ago, in a partial rebuild of apparel brands that had previously sat inside Ascena Group before its bankruptcy. Private equity firm Sycamore Partners acquired Ann Taylor, Loft, Lane Bryant, and Lou & Grey in that process, then bought Chico's FAS in 2024 for $1 billion. That deal brought in Chico's, White House Black Market, and Soma, which also became part of KnitWell.

The Context Behind the Hire
A company assembled from several brands now needs one view of the customer across all of them.

Retail Dive also notes that Ann Taylor launched its first major integrated marketing campaign in nearly a decade this summer. The company's CEO, Lizanne Kindler, said Munson's background will help build the tools, insights, and infrastructure the brands need. Putting data, digital, and customer engagement under one leader is a structural answer to a portfolio problem: each brand has its own customers, but the data and technology can be shared.

This is our read, not something KnitWell has stated: when a company that has been assembled brand by brand creates an enterprise role over customer data, it is usually trying to stop each brand from solving the same problem separately. That is a common reason to consolidate, and it is one that applies well beyond apparel.

What Does a Chief Digital and Customer Data Officer Actually Own?

KnitWell has described the scope in general terms, and it has not published an org chart. Based on that description, the role sits at the intersection of four things that are usually separate budgets: the data foundation, the analytics that interpret it, the marketing that acts on it, and the digital experience customers see. Putting them together gives one executive accountability for whether personalization and AI-assisted marketing actually work, instead of leaving each to depend on the goodwill of the others.

For hiring, that matters because it creates a different kind of search. A candidate for this seat is not a traditional CMO or a traditional head of IT. Munson's background, a mix of digital leadership at a global beauty company and brand-side roles in fashion, shows the profile: someone who has run digital and data at scale, across brands, and who has shipped customer-facing technology. Candidates who combine all of that are a short list, and our chief digital officer recruiting page explains how we approach searches at this level.

Which Five Roles Does a Leader Like This Need Beneath Them?

A combined leader cannot do the work alone. Whatever the title above them, the same five functions have to be staffed. These are the ones we would expect any company with this kind of mandate to need covered.

Customer Data & Identity Lead

Owns how customer records are unified across brands, channels, and tools: identity resolution, consent, and the customer data platform. Without this role, personalization is built on duplicate and conflicting profiles. This is a more technical hire than most eCommerce teams have made, and our eCommerce technology recruiting work shows how scarce strong candidates are.

Customer Insights & Analytics Leader

Turns the data into decisions: segmentation, lifetime value, cohort behavior, and measurement of what marketing actually caused. This function decides whether leadership trusts the numbers. We cover how to stage this hire in our eCommerce analytics team hiring guide, and you can search the market through our eCommerce analytics recruiting page.

Personalization & Lifecycle Marketing Lead

Puts the data to work in email, SMS, on-site experiences, and loyalty. This is where customer data becomes revenue, and it is the function most directly tied to repeat purchase. Our guide to hiring a head of retention and lifecycle marketing breaks down the skills, and our lifecycle and CRM recruiting page shows how we search for them.

Digital Marketing & Acquisition Lead

Runs paid, search, and social acquisition using the audiences and insights the other functions produce. When this team works from the same customer data as lifecycle, acquisition stops optimizing for first orders alone. See our post on the eCommerce growth marketing leader for how that role is evolving.

AI Marketing Operations Lead

Evaluates, deploys, and governs AI-assisted marketing tools: which ones to adopt, what data they can touch, and how their output is checked. KnitWell named AI-assisted marketing tools explicitly in the new role's scope, which is a sign these tools now need an accountable owner. Our look at the new eCommerce job titles shows how quickly this kind of position is appearing.

Personalization does not fail because the tool is wrong. It fails when data, marketing, and eCommerce each own a piece of the customer and no one owns the whole, and that is an org design and hiring decision, not a software one.

What Does This Mean for the Talent Market?

The most useful detail in this announcement for recruiters may be where the new officer came from. Munson's prior roles were in beauty and fashion, with a global brand in between. A company in apparel hired a leader who had been global chief digital officer at a beauty group. That tells us the talent pool for senior data and digital roles is defined by skills and scale, not by a narrow category. Hiring managers who limit searches to their own subcategory will miss candidates, and candidates who assume their category experience is a limit may be underselling themselves. We make a related point in our post on hiring eCommerce leaders across the US, Canada, and UK, where we look at how the pool changes by market.

It also means the competition for these candidates is broader than it looks. A fashion and apparel brand is competing for a hybrid digital and data leader with beauty, CPG, and luxury companies at the same time. For apparel and fashion searches in particular, our fashion and apparel eCommerce recruiting page covers how we approach the pool, and our beauty eCommerce recruiting page covers the neighboring pool.

AI is part of why the pool is tight. As we noted in our post on AI's projected share of US eCommerce sales, most teams do not yet have anyone who owns the AI side of the business. The same is true for the tools KnitWell highlighted: there are few candidates who have governed AI-assisted marketing at an enterprise scale, so expect searches for these roles to run longer than a standard director search.

Should Your Company Create a Role Like This?

Probably not as a first move. A company with one brand and one eCommerce team is usually better served by a strong VP or Director who explicitly owns customer data and personalization priorities, plus an analytics hire. Our posts on how to tell a Head, a Director, and a VP apart and which level to hire will help you decide what level fits your scope.

A combined executive role starts to make sense when three things are true: you run several brands or business units, your customer data is fragmented across them, and there is an enterprise agenda for personalization or loyalty that no single current leader can drive. If you are at that point, define the scope before you define the title. The reporting line and budget authority matter more than the name. Our eCommerce org chart resource shows how different structures put data and digital in different places, and our salary guide helps you benchmark compensation as you scope the team underneath.

It is also worth being clear about what is not known. KnitWell has only just announced the appointment, so there are no published results from the new structure. The takeaway today is not that a combined role will work for everyone. It is that the work of owning the customer across data, marketing, and digital has become important enough that a large multi-brand company created a senior seat for it, and every eCommerce team should know who owns that work in their own organization.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who did KnitWell Group name as chief digital and customer data officer?

KnitWell Group, the parent company of Ann Taylor, Loft, Talbots, and the Chico's brands, appointed Angelica Munson as its chief digital and customer data officer, according to a September 22 press release reported by Retail Dive. The role is newly created. Munson previously served as global chief digital officer at Shiseido Group and held senior roles at Fast Retailing, including at Theory and Helmut Lang, and at Estée Lauder's Clinique brand.

What does a chief digital and customer data officer do?

At KnitWell, the role oversees customer data, customer insights, AI-assisted marketing tools, personalization, digital marketing, and other parts of the company's enterprise strategy. In general, a combined chief digital and customer data officer owns the data foundation and the customer-facing digital experience as one connected function, rather than splitting them between a CTO, a CMO, and an eCommerce leader.

Why are retailers combining digital and customer data leadership?

Personalization, AI-assisted marketing, and loyalty programs all depend on the same customer data, and they stall when data, marketing, and eCommerce report to different executives with different priorities. A single owner can set shared definitions, funding, and roadmaps across those teams. KnitWell's CEO said the new leader's data, digital, and customer engagement expertise will help build the tools, insights, and infrastructure its brands need.

What roles does a customer data and digital leader need beneath them?

A leader with this scope typically needs five supporting functions: customer data and identity, customer insights and analytics, personalization and lifecycle marketing, digital marketing and acquisition, and an AI marketing operations lead who evaluates and governs AI-assisted tools. At smaller companies one person may cover two of these, but each piece of work still needs a clear owner.

Should a mid-size eCommerce company hire a chief digital and customer data officer?

Usually not at first. Companies with a single brand and one eCommerce team are better served by a VP or Director of eCommerce who owns data and personalization priorities, plus an analytics hire. A combined executive role makes sense when a company runs several brands, has fragmented customer data, and has an enterprise personalization or loyalty agenda that no single existing leader can drive.
